Berea College, situated in Berea, Kentucky, stands out as a beacon of educational inclusivity and social responsibility. Founded in 1855, it holds the distinction of being the first racially integrated and coeducational college in the Southern United States. This pioneering spirit still thrives in the institution’s core mission.

Berea College is a remarkable institution where the No-Tuition Promise ensures that no student bears the burden of tuition costs. This unique commitment extends to international students as well, making Berea College the sole institution in the United States to offer 100% funding for their first year of enrollment. Through a combination of financial aid and scholarships, Berea covers not only tuition but also room, board, and fees, providing a rare opportunity for all students to access higher education without the financial strain typically associated with college attendance.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Berea College is its commitment to providing tuition-free education. This commitment is rooted in the college’s belief that education should be accessible to all, regardless of their financial circumstances. To make this vision a reality, Berea College primarily serves students from low-income backgrounds, with a particular focus on those hailing from the Appalachian region, where educational opportunities can be scarce.

The heart of Berea’s educational model lies in its Labor Program. Here, students engage in practical work experiences for 10-15 hours per week. These work opportunities not only help students offset the cost of their education but also foster a strong work ethic and a deep sense of responsibility. This unique work-learn approach not only equips students with academic knowledge but also cultivates valuable life skills.

Moreover, Berea College’s emphasis on community and social responsibility is integral to its ethos. Through their shared experiences, students form a close-knit community that promotes mutual support and a commitment to giving back to society.

In summary, Berea College is a pioneering institution that not only offers a tuition-free education but also instills a sense of purpose, community, and social responsibility in its diverse student body. It continues to stand as a model of inclusive and transformative higher education.

Berea College offers a remarkable scholarship opportunity for international students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in any field. Each year, the college admits approximately 30 new international students, and these students are the target group for this scholarship program.

The scholarship includes comprehensive financial support and scholarships covering 100% of tuition, room, board, and fees for the first year of enrollment. For subsequent years, international students are expected to save $1,000 annually to contribute to their expenses. To help meet this obligation, the college provides summer job opportunities for international students.

Additionally, accepted international students are required to pay a $2,200 (US) deposit to confirm their enrollment. This deposit can be utilized by international students to cover specific expenses during their four years of enrollment. For those who may face financial constraints in paying all or part of the deposit, the college offers additional financial aid options.

In summary, Berea College’s scholarship program is a substantial financial support system for international students, ensuring that they can pursue their education with minimal financial stress while promoting personal responsibility and work experience through summer jobs.
